Firings
The kiln is fired a few times a year, when there is enough work to fill it and enough dry wood to burn.
A firing, roughly
- Loading — one day, shelf by shelf, wadding under every pot
- Warming — a small fire overnight to drive out moisture
- Stoking — around the clock until the cones bend at the back
- Cooling — three days with the bricks sealed, no peeking
- Unloading — the best day, and the one with the most surprises
Next firings
We fire when the kiln is full rather than on fixed dates, usually in spring and in autumn. Write to us if you would like to know when the next one is planned or to put something aside from it.
